Here are some interesting facts about iron that you may not know about:

  • It’s symbol is Fe and it has an atomic number of 26 making it appear in the eighth column of the periodic table. The symbol Fe is established from the Latin word for iron which is Ferrum.
  • It is the sixth most common element in the entire universe and makes up the majority of the inner and outer core of our world and is thought to be an important element in the reason why the surface of Mars appears red.
  • One of the largest used of iron is in the manufacturing of steel which is an alloy that is made up of iron and carbon. Steel is in fact 1000 times harder than iron when it is combined together with carbon to create the steel alloy. We have been creating steel for over 4000 years and its uses have only increased over the years.

  • Steel is used in building construction, vehicles, tools and numerous other items that we encounter on a daily basis. Stainless steel is used for kitchenware products as well as in the medical industry for the creation of surgical tools and implements.
  • Iron is an important part of our bodies. It forms a part of hemoglobin which has a key role in the way oxygen is carried throughout our bodies in our blood stream. The levels of iron in our bodies needs to be carefully managed as too little and we can become anaemic but equally too much can be toxic It is also equally important to plants as iron is needed as a part of the chloroform that is a key element of the process of photosynthesis which is the way in which sugars and other materials such as sunlight are converted into energy for the plant to use in its growth.
