Five facts about the liver

Our livers are the hardest-working organs in our body, carrying out several important functions to keep us healthy.

Solid weight

The liver is the largest organ in the human body, weighing 1.3kg in women and 1.8kg in men. Roughly the same size as a rugby ball, it is located between the diaphragm and stomach on the right side.

Different functions

It carries out more than 500 functions, the most important of which is breaking down food before converting it into energy. Carbohydrates are turned into glucose, which is stored inside the liver as glycogen. When the body requires energy, the liver converts this back into glucose.

Similar to an elastic band

While the liver is resilient, like an elastic band, it can only be stretched to a certain point before it breaks. It has the ability to create new cells to replace damaged tissue and regenerate.
