At first glance, there’s not a lot of similarity between a Formula One pit stop and checking over your trailer before you head off to the tip on a Saturday morning. One involves 20 very trained engineers, working together to change four tyres in less than two seconds, while millions of people watch in amazement. The philosophy, however, is identical.

Pit stops are fast because they are so ridiculously systematic. Everyone knows exactly what they are doing, why they are doing it and what they are looking for. Nothing is left to chance. No one is looking at a wheel and saying: ‘Oh, that looks all right.’ The system is precise, written down and repeated so often that it becomes second nature. Speed is a by-product of precision, not a substitute for it.

Trailer maintenance works on the same principles, but it seems to be applied considerably less rigidly. The people who don’t have any problems are not lucky. They are systematic.
