SIM cards are small chips which connect mobile devices to cellular networks. They store essential information such as subscriber identification and network access credentials. Over the years, SIM technology has evolved, giving rise to a variety of new formats.
There are 25 million devices connected to mobile networks, and research shows that this is expected to rise to 30 billion by 2030. Let’s take a look at the different SIM cards available.

What is an eSIM?

eSIMs, or embedded SIMs, are a modern take on traditional SIM cards. Unlike removable plastic SIMs, eSIMs are permanently embedded within a device’s circuitry, eliminating the need for users to remove them. This has several advantages such as freeing up space inside the device.

It also helps to reduce production costs and makes it easier for users to switch between network providers, allowing users to activate multiple profiles on a single device. This is known as a multi network SIM card. A multi network SIM card is particularly useful for international travellers or individuals who require access to multiple networks.

What is iSIM (Integrated SIM)?

iSIMs are an even more advanced form of embedded SIM technology. They are designed specifically for IoT (Internet of Things) devices and incorporate additional security features to protect sensitive data. iSIMs are embedded directly into the device’s mainboard, offering a more compact and secure solution for IoT applications.

What is a soft SIM?

Soft SIMs, also known as virtual SIMs, are not physical cards but rather digital representations of SIM profiles that reside on the device’s operating system. Soft SIMs eliminate the need for physical SIM cards and allow users to manage their profiles without physical access to the device.

As technology advances, we can expect further innovations, with unique advantages that cater to specific needs.
