Chalet Style In The Interior Of Apartments And HousesMarch 4, 2019
Chalet style originated in the south-east of France. The prototype of modern alpine villas served as modest, but durable houses of shepherds in the mountains, designed to protect ordinary people from snow and frost. Rough interior and natural, practical materials – these features of shepherd’s dwellings formed the basis of the exteriors and interiors of modern houses and apartments in the style of a chalet. The chalet has a lot in common with the French Provence, American country style, rustic style, because the French, Swiss and Italians took part in the formation of this direction.
The main features of the chalet style
Chalet style would not be so authentic and recognizable if modern designers did not adhere to the basic rules for creating interiors of houses and apartments that have been tested for centuries. The main characteristics of the chalet:
- use in decoration (and construction) of natural materials, among which are dominated by stone and wood;
- coarse surface treatment, real things “with history” or deliberate aging of objects and finishes;
- natural color range, inspired by mountain landscapes (gray-blue, white, black, sandy, terracotta, marsh-green, earthy tones with a slight impregnation of blue, black, emerald, burgundy or wine);
- natural decor, textiles, handmade dishes;
- simple, rough, but beautiful and durable furniture;
- lack of decorative decorations (exquisite patterns, carving, artistic forging);
- good natural lighting due to large windows and muffled – artificial;
- ceiling beams and a fireplace as the base, the heart of the house in the style of a chalet.
It is possible to embody all the listed characteristics in the interior only in a private house, and they are laid at the design stage.
Authentic Alpine Houses
Today it has become fashionable to create interiors in the style of chalets in country houses and even in city apartments, and there are many reasons for this. Many townspeople dream of a simple but cozy atmosphere, close to nature. The chalet-style interior is romantic and is associated with beautiful mountain landscapes, fresh air, tourist alpine routes and elite ski resorts. Sloping roofs, large east-facing windows, covered terraces around the houses, stone floors and fully wooden mansards, large beams, chandeliers and fireplaces with blazing flames are typical features of the typical Alpine chalets, as in the photo below. Designers interpret these characteristics taking into account the wishes of the customer, turning the shepherds’ houses into real palaces and villas with panoramic windows, spacious halls, cozy bedrooms, and rooms,
Variants of interiors of modern houses and apartments in the spirit of the chalet
It is possible to embody the chalet style in the interior of houses and apartments, especially given the huge range of modern finishing materials, design techniques, furniture, household items and accessories that imitate natural (or are) analogs, antiques and decor. Large-scale work in the decoration and furnishings of a country house should be led by an experienced designer. If you just want to give the apartment some features of a chalet, then if you have the desire and inspiration, you can cope with this task yourself.
Window and doorway design
The design of door and window openings in the spirit of the chalet is performed in the same style and preferably from the same material (wood of the same breed and shade), which is used for flooring. In the original, the windows of a house-chalet should be large, letting in plenty of natural light and separated by imposts or a special layout of frames. The doors are made of wood, which should look rude. Irregularities and roughness are allowed, knots and natural wood texture are clearly visible. The surface should be matte, without gloss, it is possible to use the brushing technique, artificial aging.
High windows, including panoramic windows, are decorated with wooden eaves and simple plain curtains made of coarse natural ones. Linen, cotton fabrics of greyish, sandy, light pastel shades are welcome.
Floor covering, wall and ceiling decoration
The ideal material for the floor is natural wood, flooring, as well as stone slabs or their imitation. Roughly treated and aged wood of simple, durable, but not exotic species: oak, pine, larch is used for finishing the floor, walls and ceiling. Special chic – dark floors and the same shade of the beams on the ceiling, wooden paneling, imitation of wooden supports.
Ceiling beams can be “formal”, overhead, performing a purely decorative function. Volumetric constructions “hide” pipes, wires and other communications, and in modern readings of the chalet style they install spots and other lamps in wooden beams on the ceiling, and hang chandeliers. The ceiling itself can be entirely covered with a board or left white, plastered, on such a background dark wooden beams will look even more contrasting, as in the photo.
For the decoration of walls in apartments and houses, a board, wood panels, stone wallpaper made from sandstone cuts, as well as modern materials imitating stone, wood trim and brick are used. Wood is combined with white, rough plaster, porcelain stoneware, “wild” or flexible stone, special techniques are used, “stripping” the foundation of brick or stone under the plaster. In the bedroom, it is allowed to use wallpaper on one wall or its section, at the head of the bed.
Lamps and fireplace
Lamps in the interior of apartments and houses in the style of a chalet – authentic, made of simple natural materials “antique”. In rooms with high ceilings, these can be large wrought-iron chandeliers, in small rooms there can be laconic floor lamps, wall lamps and ceiling lamps with lamps imitating the flame of candles. The basis of the lamp can be made of dark metal, wood, brass, copper, you can use fabric lampshades without a pattern, pastel, bleached shades. In the interior of the chalet, the light should be soft and warm; the use of visible spots, LEDs and other modern technologies is not permissible.
The fireplace is the center, the flaming heart of the interior of the apartment and house in the style of a chalet. In modern interpretations, an electric oven can play its role, but facing with natural stone or its analogs is obligatory. To give authenticity to the atmosphere of the Alpine house, put an armful of firewood near the fireplace, install a forged stand with a poker, a shovel and other necessary accessories.
Furniture and accessories
The furniture in the interior of the apartment or house in the spirit of the chalet is rather rough, angular, devoid of frills, without embellishment. These are simple wooden beds, tables with thick tops and massive legs, the same chairs with high backs, spacious wardrobes and sideboards. Furniture items a bit, but it should be enough to store all the necessary. Upholstered furniture is also solid and solid, for its upholstery is used genuine leather, nubuck, tapestry, flax not striking bleached or pastel solid colors. Sofas, beds and chairs are decorated with woolen blankets, soft pillows, including fur. A rustic-style carpet of neutral colors or long-pile animal skins and their imitation is obligatory on the floor.
Accessories are used to a minimum. These are mainly textiles of pastel and muted shades, let’s say a checkered pattern, small color spots (blue, blue, terracotta) in the form of pillows, dishes, flower pots. In the kitchen, you can demonstrate brass and copper pans, cast iron utensils, simple ceramic pots, plates, bowls. In other rooms in pots and vases, you can plant flowers, arrange bouquets of dried flowers. The interior style of the chalet welcomes handmade accessories: embroidery, tapestries on the walls depicting landscapes, animals, wicker rugs and walkways, hand-painted vases, plates of clay and ceramics, embroidered pillowcases for pillows in soothing colors.
Living room in the interior of the chalet style
The whole furnishings of the living room in the alpine house are built around the fireplace. It is lined with stone, and bouquets of dried flowers adorn the chimney shelf. On the walls, you can place tapestries or reproductions of paintings in rough frames depicting nature, hunting scenes. Complement the entourage horns, stuffed animals and animal skins. A thick fluffy carpet of fur is placed near the fireplace, around which sofas, armchairs, and puffs are grouped. Decorate the living room with an unusual table made of wood sawn or with a base of hemp wood and a transparent tabletop.
Bedroom in the interior of the house or apartment
The bedroom interior in the style of a chalet in a house or apartment meets the general trends of direction. A solid bed made of solid wood is put on the headboard against the wall, draped with tapestry and coarse flax bedspreads, decorated with many pillows of various sizes and shades. At the headboard, you can use the finishing part of the wall wallpaper or wood paneling, fix the canopy. At the foot of the bed, install a chest or stool, lay a carpet imitating animal skin.
How to implement the style of the chalet in the interior of the apartment?
It is not recommended to fully decorate the walls with wood in the apartment: it is better to decorate one or two-thirds of the wall with wooden panels and plaster or paint the rest of it in white. As for the ceiling beams, the height of the ceilings usually does not allow for any design changes, there will be enough decorative panels that imitate natural wood. Instead of lining, you can use eco-pans and laminate, including flooring.
In an apartment of a small area, it is necessary to use wood and its substitutes for natural, light shades, and the floor, door and window trim should be identical in all rooms. A natural fireplace can be replaced with a small electric copy or a false fireplace decorated with ceramic tiles imitating natural slate. Use lamps with soft and warm light, natural textiles and handmade decor items – and your home will turn into a cozy and beautiful nest with the characteristic features of an Alpine chalet.
